Desk back: where to start
If your back complains by mid-afternoon, there’s usually no need for a perfect chair. There’s a need for more movement.
Move more often
There’s no single perfect sitting position. The most useful habit is changing position regularly: stand up for phone calls, walk during a break, and don’t spend the whole afternoon in one shape.
Get stronger
A stronger body generally tolerates a long working day better. Hip hinges, rows, carries and simple core work are a good place to start, learned with good technique and built up gradually.
When to see someone first
If your pain is severe, follows an injury, runs down a leg, or comes with numbness or weakness, see a doctor before starting any exercise programme. A good coach will work alongside your healthcare team, not instead of them.
